Ingredients

  • 6 cups apple cider fresh-pressed or store-bought, unfiltered
  • 3/4 cup dark rum or bourbon/whiskey
  • 3 cinnamon sticks or 1.5 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 6 whole cloves or 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1 star anise optional
  • 1/2 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1/3 cup brown sugar or maple syrup
  • 1 sliced apple Honeycrisp or Granny Smith, for garnish
  • 1 sliced orange optional, for garnish
  • 1.5 tbsp lemon juice optional

Method

  1. Combine cider and spices: In a large saucepan, combine apple cider, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, nutmeg, brown sugar, and lemon juice (if using).
  2. Heat: Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve sugar. Simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Add rum: Remove from heat and stir in dark rum. For cold cider, cool and chill in the fridge.
  4. Strain and serve: Strain out whole spices if desired. Pour into mugs or glasses, garnish with apple or orange slices, and serve hot or cold.

Notes

  • Storage: Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Freeze for up to 3 months.
  • Substitutions: Use vodka, spiced rum, or apple brandy instead of dark rum. Swap sugar for honey or agave.
  • Spicy Twist: Add a pinch of cayenne for heat.
  • Non-Alcoholic: Omit rum and add sparkling water for a kid-friendly version.
  • Crock Pot Option: Cook on low for 2-3 hours, adding rum just before serving.
