Ingredients
Method
- Combine cider and spices: In a large saucepan, combine apple cider, cinnamon sticks, cloves, star anise, nutmeg, brown sugar, and lemon juice (if using).
- Heat: Bring to a gentle simmer over medium heat, stirring occasionally to dissolve sugar. Simmer for 10 minutes.
- Add rum: Remove from heat and stir in dark rum. For cold cider, cool and chill in the fridge.
- Strain and serve: Strain out whole spices if desired. Pour into mugs or glasses, garnish with apple or orange slices, and serve hot or cold.
Notes
- Storage: Refrigerate in an airtight container for up to 5 days. Freeze for up to 3 months.
- Substitutions: Use vodka, spiced rum, or apple brandy instead of dark rum. Swap sugar for honey or agave.
- Spicy Twist: Add a pinch of cayenne for heat.
- Non-Alcoholic: Omit rum and add sparkling water for a kid-friendly version.
- Crock Pot Option: Cook on low for 2-3 hours, adding rum just before serving.
