Ingredients

For the Apple Filling:
  • 6 medium apples peeled and sliced (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp)
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp ground nutmeg
  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour or cornstarch for gluten-free
For the Crisp Topping:
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats or gluten-free oats
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour or almond flour for gluten-free
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar packed
  • 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter melted (or coconut oil for vegan)
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract optional

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Peel and slice apples into 1/4-inch wedges. Toss with lemon juice, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and flour in a large bowl. Spread into a greased 9x9-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix oats, flour, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt. Pour in melted butter and vanilla (if using), stirring until crumbly.
  3. Sprinkle topping evenly over apples, pressing lightly.
  4. Bake for 35-40 minutes, until topping is golden and apples are bubbling.
  5. Cool for 5-10 minutes. Serve warm with ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Storage: Refrigerate leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
  • Substitutions: Use coconut oil for vegan or almond flour for gluten-free. Try pears for a twist.
  • Spicy Kick: Add 1/4 tsp cayenne or ginger for extra flavor.
  • Serving: Drizzle with caramel sauce for a decadent touch.
